Government Efforts and Religious Stance

The Indonesian government has taken steps to combat the rise of online gambling through various regulations. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) continues to block gambling websites. In 2022, over 500,000 online gambling sites were blocked by the government. However, the issue can’t be resolved through blocking alone, as new sites frequently appear under different domains (Kominfo).

In addition, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a fatwa prohibiting all forms of gambling, including online gambling, and has urged the government to take stronger action against operators involved in this business (MUI).

Preventing the Dangers of Online Gambling

To protect society from the harmful effects of online gambling, several approaches are necessary:

Digital Literacy Education: Strong digital literacy is crucial to recognize and avoid the pitfalls of online gambling. The National Digital Literacy Movement (GNLD), initiated by Kominfo, aims to raise public awareness of internet dangers, including online gambling, through intensive education (GNLD).

Public Awareness Campaigns: Various organizations, such as the National Anti-Drug Movement (Granat) and the Indonesian Anti-Narcotics Association (PIAN), also advocate for public awareness campaigns about the dangers of online gambling and its damaging effects on young people (Granat).

Family and Community Support: Prevention should also start within families and communities. Parents need to be more vigilant about their children’s online activities and use parental control software to monitor internet usage.

Online gambling may offer a temporary thrill and the hope of quick winnings, but in reality, many people end up with prolonged regret.
